Israel Adesanya and Nassourdine Imavov will step into the Octagon on Saturday night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for a pivotal middleweight showdown at UFC Fight Night. The stakes are high for both men, with Adesanya looking to reassert himself as one of the division’s best and Imavov seeking a career-defining victory that could catapult him into title contention.

Adesanya, the former UFC middleweight champion, finds himself in unfamiliar territory. This will be his first non-title fight since 2019 and his first time competing outside of a pay-per-view since 2018. Even more pressing is the possibility of back-to-back losses for the first time in his storied combat sports career, which stretches across MMA, kickboxing, and boxing. Once considered an untouchable force at 185 pounds, Adesanya has dropped three of his last four fights. He first lost his title to Alex Pereira in 2022 but regained it in their rematch with a stunning knockout. Then came a decision loss to Sean Strickland, followed by a submission defeat at the hands of current champion Dricus Du Plessis last August. Despite the setbacks, Adesanya remains confident and unfazed by the pressure, insisting that middleweight is still his home and he has no intention of changing course.

Imavov, meanwhile, has been on a relentless march toward the top. Fighting four times in the past year, the French contender has proven to be one of the most active and durable fighters in the division. His most recent victory, a TKO over Jared Cannonier, was the kind of performance that demanded attention. Now, he steps into the biggest fight of his career against one of the sport’s most recognizable names. While many believe the pressure is on him to make a statement, Imavov sees things differently. He views Adesanya as the one with more to lose, noting that a third straight defeat would be devastating for a fighter who once ruled the division. For Imavov, a win on Saturday could secure a title shot or position him as a top contender, and he is ready to seize the moment if given the chance.

Stylistically, this fight presents an interesting clash. Both men are primarily strikers, but Adesanya has long been regarded as one of the best in the sport. His ability to control distance, counter-strike with precision, and dictate the pace has been his trademark. Even in his loss to Du Plessis, Adesanya looked sharp on the feet before getting caught in a grappling exchange. Imavov is well-rounded, possessing solid striking and an underrated ground game, but he does not have a single dominant weapon to exploit Adesanya’s weaknesses the way Pereira, Strickland, and Du Plessis did. If Imavov wants to win, he will likely need to mix in takedowns and make the fight ugly, forcing Adesanya out of his comfort zone.

However, Adesanya has spent his career ensuring that fights take place on his terms. His takedown defense has held up against strong wrestlers, and his striking remains a level above most middleweights. With his back against the wall, this feels like a fight where he reminds the world why he was once the king of the division. Expect a calculated performance from Adesanya, who will pick apart Imavov before securing a finish in the later rounds.

Prediction: Israel Adesanya by TKO
