The Miami Hurricanes are in the thick of spring practice, and early impressions are positive. Based on the latest updates, here are four takeaways from the first week of spring practice:

Secondary Showing Major Improvement
Miami’s secondary looks like a completely different unit compared to last year. The group struggled in 2024 with alignments and adjustments against motions and shifts, but new defensive back coaches have brought a renewed focus on fundamentals and technique. Standout CB Xavier Lucas is turning heads with his elite body type, length, and athleticism, potentially the best corner on the team by next season. Meanwhile, Charles Brantley is stepping up as the CB1, and safeties like Zechariah Poyser (instinctual and twitchy) and Dylan Day are making plays. This revamped secondary could be a game-changer for the Canes in 2025.

Elija Lofton Emerges as a Top Talent
Versatile tight end Elija Lofton is making a strong case as one of the best players on the roster. Coaches and teammates alike are raving about his work ethic, he’s been and his ability to threaten defenses all over the formation. Lofton’s willingness to adapt (“Whatever they need me to, I’m going to do it”) and his standout performances in practice have him neck-and-neck with OT Francis Mauigoa for the title of Miami’s top player. His presence adds a dynamic weapon to the offense.

Armondo Blount Headlines a Promising Young Defensive Line
The defensive line is flashing serious potential, led by freshman edge rusher Armondo Blount. Described as a “different animal” by teammate Akheem Mesidor, Blount’s strength and explosiveness have been on full display, particularly during bag drills where he looks like the smoothest and most powerful lineman. Alongside Blount, Justin Scott is generating penetration from the interior, while Hayden Lowe brings a five-star physical profile to the DE spot. With veterans like Akheem Mesidor and Booker Pickett (a pass-rush specialist) also impressing, Miami’s recruiting prowess at DL is paying off with a young, talented group.

Malachi Toney and JoJo Trader Elevate the WR Room
The wide receiver position is loaded with elite talent, headlined by freshmen Malachi Toney and sophomore JoJo Trader. Toney, a slot weapon, has caught attention with his explosive routes and quick grasp of the playbook—OC Shannon Dawson praises his physical and mental maturity, hinting at an early role. Trader, meanwhile, is gaining confidence after a strong bowl performance and added weight, positioning him as the top WR on the team. With other freshmen like Daylyn Upshaw and Josh Moore also making plays, Miami’s passing attack could be lethal in the coming seasons.

It’s only week one of Spring but the signs are positive that the secondary which was a weakness last year seem to no longer be a weakness and that Mario’s recruiting efforts are starting to pay dividends with Malachi Toney, Jo Jo Trader, Armondo Blount, and Elija Lofton making serious waves. The future looks bright for the Canes 2025 season.
