The defending champion Florida Panthers wasted no time reminding the NHL why they hoisted the Stanley Cup last season, opening their first-round playoff series with a commanding 6-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night in Tampa. Matthew Tkachuk, returning to action after a two-month absence, looked as if he hadn’t missed a shift, scoring twice on the power play and adding an assist in a dominant performance that set the tone early.

Tkachuk’s return couldn’t have been better timed. After easing into the game, the star winger exploded in the second period with two quick goals — part of a rapid three-goal outburst that blew the game open. His first tally came just seconds after Nate Schmidt’s power-play strike, and within 14 seconds, the Panthers had turned a 2-1 edge into a 4-1 cushion. Tkachuk’s second goal of the night pushed the lead to 5-1 and effectively silenced the Amalie Arena crowd.

The Panthers were ruthlessly efficient, scoring six goals on just 16 shots against Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, who had one of the roughest outings of his career. It marked the 24th time Vasilevskiy has surrendered six goals in a game, and the Panthers have now handed him that fate more than any other team. The Florida offense needed little volume to find the net, showcasing the kind of lethal precision that helped carry them to a title last year.

Nate Schmidt joined Tkachuk in the two-goal club, making franchise history in the process. Schmidt became just the second defenseman in Panthers playoff history to score multiple goals in a game, joining Brandon Montour. Sam Bennett and Sam Reinhart also found the back of the net and added assists, rounding out a night where Florida’s top-end talent showed up in full force.

On the other side, Tampa Bay struggled to generate offense, with goals from Jake Guentzel and Brayden Point serving as their lone highlights. The Lightning also suffered a setback when center Anthony Cirelli exited the game midway through the second period and did not return. His status remains unclear heading into Game 2.

Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was solid for Florida, stopping 20 shots and keeping the Lightning from gaining any momentum. With a veteran presence in net and their stars firing on all cylinders, the Panthers looked every bit like the team to beat once again.

Game 2 is set for Thursday night in Tampa, where the Lightning will be searching for answers. Meanwhile, Florida will look to tighten its grip on a series that already feels like it’s tilting in their favor.
