In an event that promised a display of pure violence, UFC 291 lived up to its billing, providing fans with a night filled with violence. Headlining the event was a battle between two of the sport’s most lethal professionals, Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier, which culminated in a jaw-dropping knockout.

In the lightweight main event that had the entire MMA community on the edge of their seats, Gaethje and Poirier showcased their talents and will. It was Gaethje, however, who emerged as the ultimate victor, securing a stunning knockout victory with a head kick at the 1:00 mark of Round 2. Despite Poirier’s defensive efforts, Gaethje’s sheer power broke through Poirier’s block, sending his opponent toppling backward. Referee Herb Dean swiftly intervened, waving off the fight as Gaethje celebrated becoming the second-ever BMF champion.

The co-main event featured a title eliminator at light heavyweight, pitting former middleweight champion Alex Pereira against former light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz. Both fighters were determined to make a statement and earn their shot at UFC light heavyweight gold, especially with the vacant title up for grabs following Jamahal Hill’s injury.

Pereira, in his light heavyweight debut, showcased his superior striking skills, surviving a momentary scare when Blachowicz took him down early in the fight. Once back on his feet, Pereira’s vicious leg kicks and overall striking proved to be the difference. The fight remained competitive throughout all three rounds, with two judges scoring the bout 29-28 in favor of Pereira, securing his victory and positioning him as a potential title challenger in the near future.

In another highly anticipated fight, Tony Ferguson’s struggles continued against Bobby Green. Ferguson showed moments of brilliance, peppering Green with punches and even scoring a knockdown. However, an accidental eye poke from Green halted some of Ferguson’s momentum. Green seized the opportunity to gain control and executed an impressive ground-and-pound strategy in Round 2. The third round saw Green maintain his dominance, tagging Ferguson at will and ultimately securing a submission victory with an arm-triangle choke. For Ferguson this defeat drops him to 0-6 over the last six fights and it might mean the end of his fighting career in the UFC.

UFC 291 undeniably delivered on its promise of an action-packed tour de force. With Justin Gaethje’s emphatic victory, he now stands on the cusp of an opportunity to compete for the belt against the winner of Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira. Meanwhile, Alex Pereira’s remarkable debut in the light heavyweight division has paved the way for a shot at the vacant light-heavyweight title, potentially making him a two-division champion.

For Gaethje, the elusive lightweight championship belt is tantalizingly close after his previous setback. As the fighters’ trajectories continue to rise, the question remains: Could UFC 291 be the catalyst that propels both Pereira and Gaethje towards their future championship reigns? Only time will tell as they strive to etch their names in UFC history as formidable champions.
