The Miami Marlins secured an 8-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers at loanDepot park, thanks in part to Garrett Cooper’s crucial two-run homer in the seventh inning. The win was important for the Marlins, especially since they were on a long homestand.
Cooper’s home run in the seventh inning helped the Marlins regain the lead after Detroit had briefly reclaimed it in the same frame. Jean Segura’s home run in the eighth inning provided an insurance run, although it turned out that the closer David Robertson didn’t really need it.
David Robertson, who was acquired in a Trade Deadline deal with the Mets, got his first save with the Marlins in his first appearance with the team. Cooper expressed his excitement about being in a playoff race and how every game counts.
The series was also notable as it marked Miguel Cabrera’s final series in Miami. Cabrera, who was once a star player for the Marlins, did some damage to his old team, including a two-run double in the second inning of the game.
The Marlins’ starting pitcher Jesús Luzardo faced some struggles and was pulled with the team down 4-0. The Marlins managed to mount a comeback and scored four runs in the fifth inning, thanks in part to Avisaíl García’s triple, which ignited the team’s offense.
The Marlins displayed their resilience as they fought back and eventually took a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning. Unfortunately, A.J. Puk, who was the Marlins’ closer before Robertson, struggled in the seventh inning, giving up the lead to the Tigers.
Jorge López, another player acquired at the Trade Deadline, was able to stabilize the situation and earned his first win with Miami. Robertson, on the other hand, closed out the game effectively, retiring the Tigers in order and securing the victory for the Marlins.
The Marlins had some positive storylines emerging from the game, and none bigger than the fact that they are back in the wild card race. Miami sits a half game ahead of the Phillies with a four-game series with the Phillies starting Monday night. It will be one of the most crucial series of the year for the Marlins as winning this series out right can put them in a premier spot to clinch a playoff spot.
