Life Wallet congratulates University of Miami long snapper and Life Wallet’s own Clay James for being added to The Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. The Wuerffel Trophy, College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service, announced its watch list of 115 players from college football’s Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Established in 2005, the trophy honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
James is a 5-foot-11, 195-pound fifth-year redshirt junior from Cocoa Beach, Florida. Since 2019, James has served as Miami’s primary long snapper.
Since his childhood, James has always found a way to make a difference in his community. The cities of Miami and Coral Gables became a part of James when he began playing for the Hurricanes, so he never hesitated to give back. During the Covid-19 pandemic, James saw too many families struggling with hunger. So, James and several other Hurricane student-athletes, volunteered for weekly shifts at a local food bank, Grove Outreach. These shifts gave James perspective to get further involved. James also participates with Miami Second Spoon Program, started in part by former Hurricanes running back, Robert Burns. Second Spoon turns food, which would be wasted, into meals on its own food truck and delivers them to communities in need. James is a student ambassador for the Miami’s “It’s On Us” campaign, an outreach program that seeks to stop sexual violence on college campuses across the country. He has also spent time working with the Community Fridge Organization in Overtown, the Lotus House, the Miami Mission Homeless Shelter and several other organizations. James has totaled close to 200 hours of community service with the Hurricanes. James encourages and acts as a mentor to other student-athletes to get them involved in community outreach. He feels his work in the community is far from finished and he has set a goal to raise money to serve thousands of meals to those in need.
The formal announcement of the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy recipient is scheduled to be made on December 8, and the presentation of the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy will occur on February 24, 2023. At Life Wallet , all our votes are for Clay James and we look forward to James being the first Hurricane to win the Wuerffel Trophy.
