The Miami Dolphins opened their 2024 season with a 20-17 comeback win over the Jacksonville Jaguars at Hard Rock Stadium, but the day wasn’t without drama both on and off the field. Before kickoff, Dolphin’s star receiver Tyreek Hill was briefly detained by police for a driving violation, adding an unexpected twist to the game’s narrative. Despite the distraction, Hill played a pivotal role in Miami’s second-half surge that led to victory.
The game started with the Jaguars jumping out to a 17-7 lead by halftime, powered by a 1-yard touchdown run from Travis Etienne Jr. and a 14-yard scoring pass from Trevor Lawrence to rookie Brian Thomas Jr. Jacksonville’s defense kept the Dolphins’ ground game in check, limiting them to just 29 rushing yards in the first half, including only 1 yard in the opening quarter.
The Dolphins flipped the momentum in a rapid sequence late in the third quarter. Safety Javon Holland delivered a game-changing forced fumble, preventing Jacksonville from extending their lead to 24-7. Just moments later, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa connected with Hill for an electrifying 80-yard touchdown, narrowing the Jaguars’ lead to three points.
“I feel like that had to be the play of the game,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said about Holland’s forced fumble. “You are talking about a gigantic flip in points and momentum.”
Hill, who totaled 130 yards on seven catches, proved his resilience on the field after the pre-game incident. Tagovailoa, who finished the day with 338 passing yards, found his rhythm in the second half, guiding the Dolphins on multiple drives. Miami’s defense also stepped up, shutting down the Jaguars and registering key sacks from Emmanuel Ogbah and Jaelan Phillips in the fourth quarter to keep Jacksonville scoreless after halftime.
Kicker Jason Sanders, who missed an earlier attempt, redeemed himself with two field goals in the final quarter, including a 52-yard game-winner as time expired. His clutch performance sealed Miami’s comeback victory and moved them to 1-0 on the season.
Despite their strong first-half performance, the Jaguars couldn’t capitalize in the second half. A costly fumble by Etienne at the goal line and a failed fourth-and-1 conversion at their own 32-yard line allowed Miami to seize control of the game. Lawrence, who threw for 162 yards and one touchdown, struggled to sustain drives as the Dolphins’ defense tightened.
In the aftermath of the game, Hill addressed his brief detention, expressing confusion over the situation but remaining focused on the team’s victory. “I wasn’t disrespectful because my mom didn’t raise me that way,” Hill stated. “I’m just glad that my teammates were there to support me.”
The Dolphins will now prepare for a divisional showdown with the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night, while the Jaguars head home to face the Cleveland Browns in their season opener.
