2025 wide receiver Vernell Brown III couldn’t have had a better day at Miami’s 7-on-7 camp on June 25. Not only did his team, Jones (Fla.), win the event, but he walked away with an offer from the Hurricanes.

“I played really well. I mean, you can always be a little bit better, but personally, I think I played really well considering that was only my second tournament with the team,” said Brown, who previously played at Wildwood (Fla.)

Brown received his Miami offer from wide receivers coach Kevin Beard, and he appreciated the authenticity Beard showed during their conversation.

“We were just talking about different life stuff, and then obviously, [Beard] liked the way I played so he said he wanted to see me actually play in person. And then so we played a game, and after the game he just told me I had an offer from Miami and then we just continued our conversation,” Brown said. “He’s a very knowledgeable guy, and the thing I like the most about him is how authentic he is. Basically, he doesn’t really recruit, like he just tells you the real and if that’s what you want to hear then I think you would be a guy for him. And if you’re one of those players where you want to know all the good, want to tell you everything you want to hear, then that’s not him. He’s a very real guy and I really like that about him.”

Brown has offers from high-major programs like Michigan, Georgia, Ohio State and Florida State. The Seminoles were one of the first schools to offer Brown in 2022, and he made an in-state trip to Tallahassee for an unofficial visit in March.

“It was great,” Brown said about his Florida State visit. “I got a chance to talk to with [head coach Mike] Norvell and [wide receivers coach Ron] Dugans, and along with what I said about Coach Beard, I like that about Coach Norvell too. He’s a very real guy. He’s not going to tell you everything you want to hear. He tells you the real. He lets you know when you need to tighten up and he doesn’t really recruit. He just tells you what it is. If that’s for you, then that’s for you.”

The Player:

Brown is a dynamic receiver who can play on the outside and in the slot. The 5-foot-11.5, 170-pound playmaker has the elusiveness with the ball in his hands to threaten defenses after the catch, as well as the ball skills to bring down contested passes downfield.

“Most people have a lot of skills,” Brown said. “I mean, everybody’s talented, but I think it’s the actual skills and knowledge of the game that separates me from other players.”
