In the midst of one of their most important recruiting weekends of the offseason, the Miami Hurricanes received a commitment on Saturday night from linebacker Cameron Pruitt during his official visit to UM.
Pruitt is an athletic, 6-foot-3 linebacker who’s been one of this recruiting cycle’s fastest-rising prospects in recent months. Since this past December, Pruitt has received 38 Division I offers, including ones from storied programs like Miami, Alabama, Penn State, Tennessee, LSU and Notre Dame.
The Theodore (Ala.) High School product is the 10th commit in Miami’s 2024 class. He is the second linebacker pledge, joining South Florida native Vincent Shavers, who committed to the ‘Canes on May 19.
Pruitt is a physical defender who does not shy away from contact. The main thing that stands out about his film is his tackling. He hits hard and is rarely overpowered at the point of attack.
Because of his athleticism, Pruitt is like a missile when rushing toward ball carriers. He finished his junior campaign with 99 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, three pass deflections, two sacks and an interception.
Pruitt can line up off the edge, as an off-the-ball linebacker or even in the slot. His positional versatility will allow the Hurricanes’ coaching staff to utilize him in a variety of ways. Pruitt’s coverage ability should translate well to the collegiate level, given how that skill has become almost a necessity for modern-day linebackers to have. He probably will also play on special teams because of his hitting capabilities and experience in high school as a gunner.
Pruitt will have to put on more mass to adequately fill out his frame. At 190 pounds, he is undersized compared to a player he shares similarities in play style with: Miami freshman linebacker Bobby Washington, who is listed at 220 pounds. Pruitt, who is rated as a high three-star by the On3 Sports Industry Rankings, will likely further his rise in these recruiting rankings as a senior as he continues to develop into the potential star he could one day become.
