Head coach Mario Cristobal expressed his satisfaction with the first day of work for the 2023 Miami Hurricanes. The team held its first fall practice on a hot and humid Tuesday morning, adhering to NCAA rules with shirts and shorts. Cristobal was encouraged by the strong competition displayed on both sides of the ball.
On day one, progress in culture stood out the most to Cristobal. He noticed attention to detail, finishing plays, and overall improvement. Miami has brought in 41 new scholarship players since the end of the 2022 season, and Cristobal is pleased with how they’ve assimilated into the team, raising the competition level.

The practice featured standout performances, including CB Jadais Richard’s impressive 7-on-7 work and TE Elijah Arroyo’s return from a non-contact knee injury. Starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke displayed comfort, urgency, and proactive leadership.
Cristobal is pleased with the offensive tempo mix and how OC Shannon Dawson’s personality fits well with the team. Backup QB Jacurri Brown and freshman QB Emory Williams showed improvements, while running backs Mark Fletcher and Christopher Johnson provided strong depth.

OL Matt Lee highlighted the execution and crispness of the offense, praising their performance in moving the ball.

DB Kamren Kinchens acknowledged the challenges the new firepower on offense brings to the defense, offering valuable practice opportunities.

Offensive lineman Zion Nelson was a limited participant due to an injury, while safety Markeith Williams was absent from practice.
Miami has plans to hold scrimmages on August 12th and August 18th, and the team will return to practice on Wednesday, August 2nd.
