Kamaru Usman is undoubtedly one of the greatest fighters to ever compete in the UFC. His wrestling and striking skills have made him a dominant force in the welterweight division, and he has successfully defended his title multiple times. However, his recent loss to Leon Edwards has put pressure on him to win their upcoming rematch if he wants to be considered the best welterweight of all time.

The defeat to Edwards was a shocking one, especially considering how dominant Usman had been up until that point. But it also serves as a reminder that no fighter is invincible, and even the greatest can be caught off-guard. Usman, however, has promised to bounce back stronger, and the rematch with Edwards gives him a chance to prove that he still deserves to be regarded as one of the best in the sport.

Usman’s legacy is already impressive. He has been the UFC welterweight champion for three years, with six consecutive title defenses under his belt. His fighting ability and grappling talent make him a formidable opponent for anyone in the octagon, and he has become a top draw in the sport. Yet, to be considered the best welterweight of all time, Usman needs to defeat Edwards in their rematch. Edwards is a great fighter, and he has proven himself to be a formidable opponent and deserving champion. But Usman has the skill and experience to overcome Edwards, and a win in their rematch would cement his legacy as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history.

The stunning defeat to Edwards, which came in the final minute of a fight he was dominating, reminds me of the time Georges St. Pierre lost to Matt Serra. In April 2007, GSP was set to defend his UFC welterweight title against the relatively unknown Matt Serra at UFC 69. At the time, GSP was riding a six-fight win streak and was considered by many to be unbeatable in the welterweight division, just like Usman was considered before the Edwards fight. His fight started well for GSP, as he took Serra down and controlled him on the ground. However, Serra was able to scramble back to his feet and landed a big right hand that rocked GSP. Serra capitalized on the opportunity and swarmed GSP with punches until the referee stopped the fight in the first round. The result was one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, as Serra was a massive underdog going into the contest. Many fans and analysts were shocked by the outcome, and GSP himself was devastated by the loss. Despite the setback, GSP was able to bounce back and eventually regain his welterweight title from Serra in a rematch the following year. He went on to defend the belt several times and solidified his status as one of the best fighters of all time.

The loss to Serra was a humbling experience for GSP and taught him the importance of staying focused and disciplined in his training. It also showed that even the best fighters could suffer unexpected setbacks, but it’s how they respond to those setbacks that truly defines their legacy. For the same reasons as GSP, the pressure on Usman at UFC 286 is immense. He knows that a loss to Edwards would not only end his reign as champion but also damage his legacy in the sport as the best welterweight fighter of all time. Like GSP, Usman must learn the lessons from his previous bout at UFC 278, slay the dragon in hostile territory, and continue the trajectory of all-time greatness that was momentarily derailed.
