MIAMI GARDENS – The long-awaited return of Tua Tagovailoa had Miami Dolphins fans buzzing with excitement, but the quarterback’s comeback from concussion protocol ultimately ended in heartbreak. The Dolphins, despite a spirited offensive performance, fell 28-27 to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, marking a crushing fifth loss in six games and a blow to their already precarious playoff hopes.
Tagovailoa, who has been sidelined with his third concussion since joining the NFL, showed resilience and poise throughout the game. He completed 28 of 38 passes, racking up 227 yards, one touchdown, and Miami’s highest-scoring output of the season. Yet, it wasn’t enough to secure a victory as the Cardinals’ final 13-play, 73-yard drive ended in a game-winning 34-yard field goal by Chad Ryland.
“It feels good to be back with my teammates,” Tagovailoa said postgame. “It’s tough to lose, but we were going up against a really good team, and I’m just trying to bring some spark to this offense.”
After an up-and-down season without their star QB, Miami’s offense finally found its groove. Tua’s return breathed life back into the offense, energizing receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, who had struggled with reduced production under the Dolphins’ backup QBs. Hill pulled in six catches for 72 yards, including a 30-yard highlight grab, while Waddle added 45 yards on four catches. Running back De’Von Achane also shined, rushing for 90 yards and adding another 50 receiving yards, showing the potential of a balanced attack with Tua at the helm.
The game saw Miami secure a lead at multiple points, thanks to impressive drives and key plays. One memorable moment came when Tagovailoa scrambled for 13 yards, opting to slide and avoid contact—something he’s made an effort to do since his return. The crowd erupted, chanting his name in support, a testament to the resilience of both Tua and the fanbase.
Coach Mike McDaniel lauded Tua’s performance and the team’s offensive rhythm, albeit with a note of frustration. “We played our brand of football, and Tua was everything we expected,” McDaniel remarked. “But in the end, we had some critical mistakes that are hard to overcome.”
Among those mistakes were several fumbles and a mishandled snap, leading to a costly safety. Miami’s defense, already hobbled with injuries to players like Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, and Kader Kohou, struggled to contain the Cardinals’ relentless offense. The absence of defensive leader Jevon Holland, who exited due to a knee injury, only compounded Miami’s defensive woes, as Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray capitalized on a weakened secondary.
With their record slipping to 2-5, the Dolphins are in a challenging spot as they prepare to face division rival Buffalo next week. Tagovailoa, who exudes hope and confidence, still believes in a potential turnaround. “I think there’s always time, brother,” he said. Yet, for a team grappling with injuries and tough breaks, time and opportunities to turn this season around are quickly fading.
The Dolphins will need to address their defensive lapses and continue to bolster Tua’s comeback to keep the slim hope for a playoff berth alive.
