OMAHA, Neb. — In a dramatic finale at Charles Schwab Stadium, the Tennessee Volunteers captured their first national championship in college baseball with a 6-5 victory over Texas A&M in the Men’s College World Series on Monday night.
Tennessee’s (60-13) historic win was highlighted by a crucial two-run home run from Dylan Dreiling in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dreiling, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the series, also contributed a sacrifice fly in the third inning and hit home runs in all three CWS finals games, showcasing his consistent clutch performance.
The Volunteers’ journey to the championship was anything but straightforward. After dropping game one to Texas A&M with a score of 9-5, Tennessee rebounded with a late offensive surge in game two to win 4-1. They maintained their momentum into the decisive game three, where they took an early lead and held off a late rally by the Aggies to secure the title.
The pivotal moment came in the seventh inning, when Dreiling’s homer put Tennessee up 6-1. This was followed by an acrobatic slide from Hunter Ensley, who avoided a tag at home to add another run. Despite Texas A&M’s four-run rally in the final two innings, Tennessee closer Aaron Combs struck out Ted Burton to end the game and seal the victory.
Coach Tony Vitello praised his team’s unity and resilience, stating, “No better team to win for the University of Tennessee than a bunch of guys that were truly the definition of a team.” His leadership has been instrumental in transforming the Volunteers into national champions.
The win was celebrated by Tennessee alumni and fans alike. Peyton Manning, in attendance, expressed his elation, highlighting the significance of this victory for the program and the school. Tennessee’s win also continued the SEC’s dominance in college baseball, marking the conference’s fifth consecutive national title.
For the Tennessee Volunteers, this championship marks a historic achievement and sets a new standard for the program. As Coach Vitello put it, “It’s a great example of how this group got things done.” The Volunteers have now solidified their place at the pinnacle of college baseball, embodying the true spirit of determination and teamwork.
