In a thrilling main event at UFC Vegas Sean Strickland showcased his striking power and earned a second-round knockout victory over Abus Magomedov. The middleweight clash took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and headlined the card on Saturday night.
Entering the fight as the seventh-ranked middleweight contender, Strickland faced the unranked Magomedov, who was making his second appearance in the UFC. From the opening moments, it was clear that both fighters were determined to make an impact.
Unfortunately, the bout got off to a rocky start when Strickland fell victim to an accidental eye poke early in the first round. The fight was temporarily halted as the referee assessed the situation and allowed Strickland to recover. Undeterred, Strickland resumed the bout and engaged in a back-and-forth battle with his Russian opponent. Magomedov showcased his varied offense and outstruck Strickland 32-11 in the opening round, according to UFC Stats. However, Strickland remained resilient and refused to let the early setback hinder his performance. He showed incredible heart and determination as he entered the second round.
As the fight progressed, Strickland’s volume and accuracy began to take their toll on Magomedov. In the second round, Strickland turned the tables and started to dominate. He landed an impressive 70 total strikes in the frame, marking his highest striking output in a single round during his UFC career. With Magomedov visibly fatigued, Strickland seized the opportunity and unleashed a barrage of strikes on the ground. Referee Mark Smith recognized the one-sided assault and intervened, stopping the contest at 4 minutes and 20 seconds of the second round. The TKO victory marked Strickland’s 11th knockout win of his career and his first since 2020.
Following the fight, Strickland wasted no time in expressing his desire for a shot at the middleweight title. Never having competed for a UFC championship before, Strickland made it clear that he was ready for the challenge. Current middleweight champion Israel Adesanya is expected to defend his belt in September, and Strickland hopes to face the winner of the bout between Robert Whittaker and Dricus Du Plessis, set for July 8.
With this win, Strickland solidified his position among the top contenders in the middleweight division. The victory came at a crucial time for him, as he had recently rebounded from two consecutive losses against Alex Pereira and Jared Cannonier in 2022. Strickland’s performance at UFC Vegas 76 demonstrated his growth as a fighter and his ability to overcome adversity. Now, with his sights set on the middleweight title, he has established himself as a legit title contender that is at most a fight away from the title.
