American gymnastics star Simone Biles continued her storied career this weekend at the U.S. National Championships in San Jose, California. The seven-time Olympic medalist won a record breaking eighth U.S. National Championship on Sunday. Biles win moved her past Alfred Jochim, who won seven U.S. titles between 1925 and 1933.
Biles took home her eighth title with a score of 118.40, a full four points above second place finisher Shilese Jones. Biles put up an incredible 15.400 score on her final event that brought the entire crowd out of their seats. Biles was consistently the most electrifying athlete over the two-day competition and had the eyes of everyone watching.
At only 26, Biles is one of the most decorated gymnasts of all time and looks to be bouncing back from a two-year break after pulling out of multiple events during the Tokyo Olympics. Biles said she was struggling with the ’twisties’, a condition where gymnasts lose track of where they are in the air. The talented gymnast looks to have put those worries behind her and will compete next in Antwerp in September.
Biles is poised for a return to the Olympics in 2024 where she will hope to add to her four gold medals. Nearly 10 years after her debut as a teenage prodigy and two years following a concerning break in her career, Biles appears to be back on top of the gymnastics world.
