This past Friday, the Miami Hurricanes football program secured a major addition to their 2025 recruiting class by flipping the commitment of Mykah Newton, a highly regarded defensive tackle from Newberry High School in Florida. Originally committed to NC State since July, Newton made the switch to Miami, becoming the second defensive tackle in the Hurricanes’ class, joining three-star DT Donta Simpson.
Mykah Newton, currently ranked as the #9 defensive tackle in the class of 2025, stands at 6’3” and weighs 265 pounds. With an impressive 81-inch wingspan, Newton has been a dominant force on the defensive line throughout his high school career. Known for his versatility, he has accumulated over 25 sacks as a defensive end for Newberry High School but will transition to defensive tackle at Miami.
Newton’s 2023 season was nothing short of spectacular. He totaled 62 tackles, with 26 of those being tackles for loss (TFL), 13 sacks, 6 quarterback hurries (QBH), 3 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery. His ability to disrupt the backfield and make impactful plays has made him one of the most sought-after defensive linemen in the 2025 class.
Newton is a unique blend of speed, power, and technical skill. He shifts his weight effortlessly while rounding the corner, maintaining control of his body to make precise plays. His experience in both two and three-point stances provides alignment flexibility, something that will serve him well at the next level. At just 17 years old, his body is still maturing, and the Miami coaching staff sees tremendous potential for further development.
What stands out most about Newton is his motor. Miami’s coaches are particularly excited about his relentless energy and drive on the field, combined with his physical attributes—strength, power, and a massive lower body. These traits are hard to find in big defensive linemen, and Newton’s raw athleticism only adds to his upside.
Miami is eager to develop Newton into a top-tier defensive tackle. His ability to blow up the run game and rush the quarterback from multiple defensive rush lanes makes him a valuable asset. The Hurricanes see Newton as a big-time DT who was somewhat under the radar, and they believe his best football is still ahead of him.
Newton’s commitment to Miami not only adds depth to their defensive line but also brings in a high-character, high-academic individual who embodies the type of player Miami is looking to build its program around. As Newton continues to grow and refine his skills, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to become a cornerstone of the Hurricanes’ defense in the years to come.
With Newton and Simpson anchoring the future of Miami’s defensive front, the Hurricanes are poised to continue their tradition of strong defensive line play. The Canes coaching staff is confident that they have secured a game-changing talent in Mykah Newton.
