One of the top players in the country will be making not one, but possibly two major announcements on July 8th. Five-star TE Davon Mitchell is currently ranked as the top TE in the 2025 class, but is expected to announce his reclassification to 2024 along with his commitment at 4PM this Saturday.
The talented tight end from Los Alamitos High School in California has offers from just about every top program in the country, but has cut his list down to Alabama, Miami and Oklahoma. Miami and Oklahoma seem to be the main players heading into the announcement, with Alabama running in third.
Mitchell has been unable to take any official visits since he is still in the class of 2025 but has taken multiple unofficial visits down to Coral Gables. The Canes had Davon Mitchell on campus for an unofficial visit on April 8th and again during the weekend of June 24th for a camp.
While at camp on June 25th, Mitchell did a private workout in front of Miami TE coach Cody Woodiel and head coach Mario Cristobal. I watched this workout and was blown away by Mitchell’s power and movement. Mitchell is a complete package at TE with the size and physicality to put his hand in the dirt and block, as well as the athleticism and hands to run routes and be a major threat in the passing game.
Mitchell is a special talent at the TE position and one of the most physically impressive prospects in the country. At 6’5-240lbs, Mitchell has prototypical size for a tight end and the build to be productive immediately at the next level. While walking around the Canes’ indoor facility for the camp on June 25th, Mitchell could’ve easily blended in as a current member of the team and looked far more developed than any of the other high school prospects in attendance.
After having Mitchell on campus recently, Miami feels confident going into Saturday’s announcement, but Oklahoma is definitely a major threat. The Sooners also feel good about where they stand and have a lead over Miami on both the ON3 Prediction Machine and the 247 Crystal Ball. Mitchell would be the highest ranked player in Miami’s class and pairing him with Elija Lofton would arguably give the Canes the best tight end class in the country.
Mitchell has long been considered an Oklahoma lean, but Miami made things very interesting at the end. Despite a big push from the Canes, I predict this one to go the way of the Sooners.
