Alex Pereira’s legendary status is forever cemented in combat sports. Pereira defeated Jiri Prochazka to retain the UFC light heavyweight title in an event, where Pereira (11-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC) delivered a stunning second-round knockout of Prochazka (30-5-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC), further cementing his legacy as a future UFC hall of famer.
From the moment they stepped into the cage, the tension between Pereira and Prochazka was palpable. For over four minutes, they stared each other down, reminiscent of their previous encounter at UFC 295. Once the opening bell rang, the fighters engaged in a fierce exchange of strikes. Pereira targeted Prochazka’s knees with powerful kicks, while Prochazka aimed for precision shots and even managed to hold Pereira against the cage briefly. However, it was Pereira’s left hook towards the end of the first round that set the stage for what was to come, sending Prochazka stumbling back to his corner.
The second round began with Pereira wasting no time. He unleashed a devastating head kick that sent Prochazka crashing to the canvas. Pereira followed up with brutal strikes, finishing the fight just 13 seconds into the round. The victory was Pereira’s third consecutive title defense, highlighting his dominance in the division.
Although Pereira’s power is lethal, this fight was won before the fighters entered the octagon. After the fight, Pereira revealed he watched a video of Jiri warming up and noticed Prochazka had his hands down, seemingly concerned with blocking calf kicks. Pereira saw an opportunity to try the high leg kick. Throughout the majority of the first round, Pereira traded power shots with Prochazka but consistently hit him with calf kicks. This set up his high leg kick that stunned Prochazka and gave Pereira another massive victory. The strategic acumen was genius, reminiscent of Conor McGregor’s weigh-in with Jose Aldo Jr., where McGregor identified a ‘tell’ by Aldo’s arm movements that allowed him to time his perfect KO. Similarly, Pereira was able to time and set up his kick, leading Prochazka into a trap.
With another successful defense, Pereira hinted at his future ambitions, potentially eyeing a move to the heavyweight division.”I didn’t know how I was going to win, but I knew I was going to leave this Octagon happy,” Pereira said through an interpreter. He expressed interest in a future bout with current heavyweight champion Jon Jones in what would be a massive super fight; although that fight may have to wait as Jones is scheduled to face Stipe Miocic later this year.
