The Florida Panthers set the tone for the Stanley Cup Final with a commanding 3-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in game one on Saturday night. The win gives the Panthers an early lead in the series, marking the first time in franchise history they’ve led in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Sergei Bobrovsky was the star of the night, delivering a stellar performance with 32 saves. Bobrovsky, affectionately known as “Playoff Bob,” shut down the Oilers’ offense, including six critical saves against Connor McDavid. The crowd at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, roared with approval as Bobrovsky made save after save, cementing his status as one of the postseason’s top goaltenders.
“It’s fun to play those guys, those elite guys, and it’s a fun atmosphere,” Bobrovsky said post-game. “I am just alive for the opportunity, and I enjoy every second of it.”
The Panthers struck first, with Carter Verhaeghe finding the back of the net just 3:59 into the game. Verhaeghe capitalized on a defensive lapse by the Oilers, as Cody Ceci left the center of the ice to defend Aleksander Barkov, allowing Verhaeghe to score unmarked.
Evan Rodrigues extended the lead early in the second period. Sam Bennett’s aggressive forechecking set up Rodrigues, who slipped past the Oilers’ defense to make it 2-0.
Eetu Luostarinen put the game out of reach with a third goal, sealing the Panthers’ dominant performance.
The Panthers’ defense and penalty kill were crucial in maintaining their lead. Despite being outshot 32-18, Florida’s defense stood firm, going 3-for-3 on penalty kills against Edmonton’s formidable power play, which had been operating at 37.3% effectiveness in the postseason.
“We kind of know what it takes this year,” Verhaeghe noted. “We know how challenging it is, the ups and downs of playoffs and the grind of it. I think that makes us more equipped this year.”
The Oilers, despite their best efforts and a higher shot count, couldn’t find a way past Bobrovsky. Connor McDavid acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, “Lots to like. We didn’t give up too much, but what we did give up was dangerous.”
The Oilers’ defensive issues were evident, particularly on the Panthers’ first two goals. Communication breakdowns and slow back-checking plagued their performance, and Edmonton will need to make significant adjustments ahead of game two.
As the series moves forward, the Panthers’ confidence and structure will be key. Their ability to stay composed and stick to their game plan against the Oilers’ stars like McDavid and Leon Draisaitl is critical.
Florida’s win in game one is a positive omen, as historically, teams that win the first game of the Stanley Cup Final go on to win the series 76.2% of the time.
Game two is set for Monday at Amerant Bank Arena, where the Panthers will look to extend their lead and move one step closer to lifting the Stanley Cup.
