Paris, France — In a bittersweet turn of events, Noah Lyles won a bronze medal in the 200-meter final at the Paris Olympics, a race where he had been the dominant force over the past three years. Despite testing positive for COVID-19 just two days prior, Lyles chose to compete, ultimately finishing third with a time of 19.70 seconds.

Lyles’ decision to run, despite his diagnosis, highlighted his dedication and heart for the sport. However, his performance fell short of the expectations set by his previous dominance in the 200-meter event. This was supposed to be his signature race, and many had anticipated a gold medal finish.

The gold medal went to Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, who clocked in at 19.46 seconds, while American Kenny Bednarek took silver with a time of 19.62 seconds. Lyles, struggling visibly during and after the race, was seen trying to catch his breath as trainers attended to him on the track.

NBC’s Lewis Johnson and the BBC confirmed that Lyles had tested positive for COVID-19 two days before the race. His choice to compete, while courageous, underscored the significant challenges he faced. The virus appeared to sap his strength, preventing him from delivering the kind of performance that had become his hallmark.

Lyles had been aiming to become the first Olympian to win both the 100-meter and 200-meter events since Usain Bolt in 2016. His third-place finish, while commendable under the circumstances, was a far cry from the dominance he had shown in the lead-up to the Olympics.
