After a weekend of regionals that included upsets, come from behind wins, and many weather delays, sixteen college baseball teams are left standing. These sixteen teams will move on to the Super Regionals where they’ll battle it out in three game series to be among the final eight teams that head to Omaha for the College World Series.
Super Regionals
1 Wake Forest (50-10) vs. 16 Alabama (43-19)
Wake Forest is the top overall seed in the country and looked like the best team in college baseball in their regional. The Demon Deacons outscored their opponents 48-7 as they went 3-0 to advance to the Super Regional. Traveling to Winston Salem to take on the Deacons will be the Alabama Crimson Tide. Following an illegal betting scandal that resulted in the firing of their head coach, the Tide have rallied and hit their stride. Bama also went 3-0 in their regional and will be facing a buzzsaw in the top ranked Wake Forest squad.
2 Florida (48-15) vs. 15 South Carolina (42-19)
The Gators are the second overall seed in the country butstumbled slightly in their regional. After dropping their second game, Florida had to battle through the loser’s bracket and win three straight games to advance. South Carolina swept the Gators earlier in the season but will be traveling to Gainesville this time and facing arguably the best pitching staff in the country.
5 LSU (46-15) vs. 12 Kentucky (40-19)
LSU was arguably the top team for a majority of the seasonbefore losing some games late in the year. This late season slide, coupled with being eliminated from the SEC tournament early, dropped the Tigers to the fifth seed. After being eliminated in the first round of the SEC tournament, the Kentucky Wildcats bounced back to win their regional. They’ll travel to Baton Rouge to take on the Tigers in what should be a high scoring series.
7 Virginia (48-12) vs. Duke (38-22)
The Duke Blue Devils upset regional host Coastal Carolina to advance to the Super Regional against the Cavaliers. Virginia coasted through their regional and has looked very comfortable lately. Both the Blue Devils and the Cavaliers boast impressive pitching staff so runs could be at a premium in this three-gameseries.
8 Stanford (41-17) vs. Texas (41-20)
Stanford dropped an early game to Texas A&M in the regional before bouncing back to defeat the Aggies in back-to-back games to advance to the Super Regional. Now the Cardinals will host the Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns went down to Coral Gables and upset the Hurricanes to advance to the Super Regional. They will now have to make the cross-country trip to take on a Stanford team looking to head to the College World Series for a fourth straight year.
14 Indiana State (45-15) vs. TCU (40-22)
Indiana State won their regional and is the higher seeded team in their matchup with TCU; however, they will travel to Fort Worthto take on the Horned Frogs due to their facilities being used for the Special Olympics. TCU is coming off a Big 12 Championship and an impressive performance in the regionalsand now has home field advantage. The Sycamores went 3-0 in their regional, winning three close games to advance to the Super Regionals. Indiana State will hope to continue their run as the lone representative left from the Missouri Valley Conference.
Tennessee (41-19) vs. Southern Miss (45-18)
Both Tennessee and Southern Miss were two seeds that pulled off the upsets to move on to the Super Regionals. Tennessee upset Clemson who came into the regional as one of the hottest teams in the country after winning the ACC tournament. Now the Vols will travel to Mississippi to take on a Southern Miss team that lost the first game of the Auburn Regional before winning four straight games to advance.
Oregon (40-20) vs. Oral Roberts (49-11)
Oregon and Oral Roberts are two of the most unlikely teams to have advanced to the Super Regionals. Oral Roberts, despite being on a 21-game winning streak, was a four seed in the regional and is the only four seed to advance to the Super Regionals. Oregon traveled to Nashville and upset the Vanderbilt Commodores in their own regional. The Ducks will now host Oral Roberts in Eugene for the Super Regional series.
The eight Super Regional series will get started on Friday, June 9th and run through Monday, June 12th. All of the games will be available nationally on the ESPN Networks.
