The Miami Hurricanes have reached 10 wins for the first time since 2017, in Mario Cristobal’s third season. Led by quarterback Cam Ward, the Canes have established themselves as the top team in the ACC and are one win away from their 11th victory, a milestone they haven’t achieved since 2003. There’s a lot at stake for Miami—not only are they on the verge of securing a spot in the ACC Championship game, but their chances of making the 12-team playoff rise significantly with a win.

Enter Syracuse, an 8-3 team looking to spoil Miami’s hopes. For the Hurricanes, this game is essentially a playoff matchup; their season hangs in the balance. A loss means no ACC Championship and no playoff berth. However, a win gives them the chance to compete for their first-ever ACC title and enter the 12-team playoff with a potential bye week. What must the Canes do to ensure victory?

Keys to Victory

Miami needs to continue pressuring the quarterback. Last week against Wake Forest, the Canes racked up five sacks and held QB Hank Bachmeier to just 86 passing yards and a 15.5 QBR. This week, they face a tougher challenge in Kyle McCord, who has thrown for 3,946 yards and 26 touchdowns this season. Like Ward, McCord is a gambler who isn’t afraid to make risky throws and big plays. Miami must make him uncomfortable in the pocket by pressuring him and finishing plays. McCord has thrown 12 interceptions this year, and if the Canes can apply consistent pressure, they’ll create turnover opportunities.

The Hurricanes need a complete game on both sides of the ball. Against Wake Forest, Miami’s offense was stagnant for three quarters. This week, they must start strong, particularly in the second and third quarters, where they’ve struggled to score in recent games. Solid defense combined with an offense firing on all cylinders will go a long way toward securing a win.
Players to Watch
Miami
Damari Brown: After warming up last week, Coach Cristobal opted to sit Brown out, but he’s likely to play this week. Brown’s return would significantly bolster Miami’s cornerback room. With the emergence of OJ Frederique as a shutdown corner and one of the best in the ACC, Brown’s presence adds depth and talent. If he performs as well as he did against Florida earlier this season, Miami’s secondary could play a decisive role in the outcome of this game.
Miami’s Running Backs: Syracuse struggles against the run, presenting a prime opportunity for Miami’s backfield trio of Damien Martinez, Jordan Lyle, and Mark Fletcher. The Hurricanes rushed for 228 yards last week and have the potential for another 200+ yard performance if they prioritize the ground game.
Syracuse
Oronde Gadsden II: Syracuse’s top receiving target has 810 yards and five touchdowns this season. As one of the best tight ends in the country, Gadsden serves as McCord’s safety blanket and will be a key player for Miami’s defense to neutralize.
LeQuint Allen: Syracuse’s standout running back has 819 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns this season. Allen’s physical running style will challenge Miami’s linebacker corps, making him another critical player to watch.
Prediction
Miami needs to approach this game as a do-or-die playoff matchup. A loss would eliminate their chances of competing for the ACC title and likely knock them out of playoff contention. Expect Cam Ward to rise to the occasion, leading the team to their 11th win, clinching a spot in the ACC Championship game, and delivering Miami its best season in two decades.
