The Miami Hurricanes have received a significant boost to their 2026 recruiting class with the commitment of three-star quarterback Dereon Coleman. This marks the second major commitment for the Hurricanes this week, following the addition of top-100 linebacker Gavin Nix this past Monday.
Coleman, who is currently a three-star prospect, is anticipated to rise in the rankings. He is already recognized as one of the most accurate passers in the class of 2026, and his strong arm allows him to make every throw on the field. Despite his current weight of around 160 pounds, which partly accounts for his three-star rating, Coleman has nearly two years to continue working on his physique. If he can reach between 190-200 pounds by the time he enters his freshman year, he will be well-positioned to compete with Luke Nickel for a spot on the depth chart.
In the 2023 season, Coleman shared playing time with Trever Jackson and still managed to accumulate impressive stats. He finished the season with 2,236 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and six interceptions, completing 63.4% of his passes. Additionally, Coleman demonstrated his versatility by rushing for 247 yards and scoring four touchdowns on the ground, showcasing his ability to make plays with his legs despite being primarily a pocket passer.
With Coleman’s commitment, the Hurricanes now turn their attention to another high-profile recruit. Top 2025 safety Hylton Stubbs, one of the elite safeties in the nation, recently decommitted from USC and is considering both Florida and Miami. Stubbs is expected to make his decision on the 4th of July, and the Hurricanes are hopeful to secure his commitment as well.
