Kylian Mbappé, the superstar forward for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), has made headlines with his decision to leave the club and become a free agent this summer. This news sent shockwaves throughout the football world, as one of the most talented young players in the game seeks a new challenge. While several top clubs have expressed interest, Real Madrid stands as the leading contender to secure his services.
Mbappé’s desire to move on from PSG was confirmed by a report in L’Equipe, stating that the Frenchman had sent an official letter to the club, informing them of his decision not to renew his contract. PSG had given him until July 31st to decide, but Mbappé’s early response caught them off guard. This put the club in a difficult position, as they now face the prospect of either renewing his contract or selling him this summer to avoid losing him as a free agent in 2024.
Real Madrid has long been linked with a move for Mbappé, and their interest has intensified with this recent development. Melchor Ruiz, a respected journalist, highlighted that Real Madrid wanted tangible action from Mbappé, not just words, and it appears he has delivered. The Spanish giants have the financial means to make a significant offer for the French forward.
While Premier League clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea would undoubtedly be interested in Mbappé, Real Madrid remains the most likely destination. The allure of joining one of the most successful and prestigious clubs in football history, alongside the opportunity to play under legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti, could be hard for Mbappé to resist.
However, on Tuesday morning Mbappé tweeted out that the rumors were false and that he in fact planned to stay at PSG for the remainder of his contract:
MENSONGES…❌

En même temps plus c’est gros plus ça passe. J’ai déjà dis que je vais continuer la saison prochaine au PSG où je suis très heureux. https://t.co/QTsoBQvZKU
“LIES… At the same time, the bigger it is, the more it passes. I have already said that I will continue next season at PSG where I am very happy” Mbappé tweeted. Although Mbappé pushed back on the report, the language in the tweet implies he would finish out his current contract with Paris Saint-Germain and then would be eligible to test free agency. If that is truly the case then there is a high probability that PSG can lose their generational superstar for free the following summer.
L’Equipe journalist Loïc Tanzi explained in a tweet why Mbappé’s assurance shouldn’t give PSG too much confidence: “You have to understand something about Mbappé’s press release. He therefore assures that he wants to stay at PSG next season, but not to extend. It is now up to the club to open the door to a departure this summer. The communication remains the same: Extension or departure from this summer.”

Mbappé’s career at PSG has been nothing short of remarkable. Since joining the club in 2017, he has been instrumental in their three consecutive Ligue 1 titles and has consistently been a top scorer in the league. His exceptional performances earned him the Player of the Year award for the 2018-19 season, and he repeated the feat in subsequent years. In 2021, PSG signed Lionel Messi, further strengthening their already formidable attack. The team’s success continued, securing the Ligue 1 title in the 2021-22 season.
During the 2018 World Cup, Mbappé made history by becoming the youngest French player to score in World Cup competition at the age of 19. His goal propelled France to a victory over Peru in the group stage, and the team ultimately went on to win the tournament by defeating Croatia in the final. Mbappé’s remarkable talent was further highlighted in the 2022 World Cup, where he became the first player ever to score four career goals in World Cup finals.
With football’s transfer market experiencing inflated prices, Mbappé’s potential contract offers could be staggering. With Lionel Messi reportedly receiving offers of up to $1.3 billion and Cristiano Ronaldo signing a $400 million deal, Mbappé is poised to secure another historic contract from a top European club either this summer or the following summer, if he in fact decides to stay at PSG for the remainder of his contract.
While the saga surrounding Mbappé’s future unfolds, the football world waits to see where the talented Frenchman will ultimately land. Real Madrid’s pursuit of Mbappé suggests they are serious contenders to secure his signature, and if successful, it would be a major coup for the Spanish giants. With Mbappé signaling that he is willing to play out his contract for this year, the question of the year for PSG will be should they sell Mbappé this summer and get something in return, or should they let him play out his current contract this year and try to re-sign him long-term?
