The Miami Marlins capped off their weekend set with the Washington Nationals in emphatic fashion, riding a late offensive surge to an 11-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at loanDepot park. With the win, the Marlins secured the series and moved above .500 to 8-7 on the season.
The turning point came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Matt Mervis, pinch-hitting for Jonah Bride, launched a three-run homer to dead center off Jorge López. The blast was Mervis’ fifth of the year and broke the game wide open, giving Miami an 8-4 cushion it would only build on.
An inning later, Kyle Stowers added to the onslaught with a two-run double as part of a four-run frame that sealed the win. Stowers finished with three hits, joining Eric Wagaman in pacing Miami’s 14-hit effort. Bride and Javier Sanoja also came through earlier with run-scoring singles during a key two-run fourth inning that erased an early 3-1 deficit.
Cal Quantrill worked through traffic in his start, allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings. He issued five walks but managed to limit further damage. Ronny Henriquez picked up his first win of the year with a scoreless inning in relief.
For Washington, Jacob Young collected two hits and drove in a run, while Paul DeJong and Alex Call each chipped in RBI singles. Despite tallying 10 hits and drawing eight walks, the Nationals were unable to convert those opportunities into more than four runs, stranding several key baserunners. Amed Rosario was the only player to score on both of the free passes.
Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore took the loss, surrendering four runs and eight hits over six innings while striking out seven. One bright spot for Washington came in the ninth, when right-hander Cole Henry made his MLB debut, striking out two in a scoreless inning after battling back from thoracic outlet surgery.
With their bats heating up and bullpen holding steady, the Marlins head into the week on a high note, winning five of their last seven games and building momentum early in the season.
