The Miami Marlins played two series this past week between the Blue Jays and the Pirates. When Sunday was over, the Fish ended with a 4-3 record as they took three games out of four from the Pirates while only managing to take one game out of three from the Jays. The Fish find themselves eleven games above .500 and currently have the third best record in the National league.
MVP of the Week: Eury Perez
We are running out of superlatives to describe Eury Perez. Perez has been unhittable. In a two-game span this week he went 1-0 and allowed zero runs and 18 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched. Perez is now 5-1 on the year with a 1.34 ERA.
Cause for Concern: Sandy Alcantara
Alcantara continues to struggle a year after winning the Cy Young. He now stands at 2-6 with a 5.08 ERA. Alcantara has allowed at least five earned runs in three out of his four starts and was responsible for allowing five runs and giving up ten hits in the Marlins 6-3 loss to the Blue Jays. As Garret , Luzardo and Perez continue to consistently put out excellent pitching performances, Alcantara has been a disappointment this year when he was expected to become the leader of the Marlin’s pitching staff.
NL East & Wild Card Standings
The Marlins are currently third in the NL East with a 45-34 record. After going 4-3 the Fish did not lose any ground over the weekend as they are the top wild card team. Looking ahead, the Marlins will face the Boston Red Sox this week followed by a weekend series with the National league leading Atlanta Braves who are currently 5.5 games ahead of Miami for the top spot in the NL East.
