The Miami Marlins put on a dominant display as they swept the Oakland A’s in a three-game weekend series, solidifying their position as a formidable team. With the sweep, the Marlins now find themselves four games above .500 and back in the Wild Card Race, boasting a two-game lead over the New York Mets. Furthermore, the Fish have climbed to second place in the NL East, sitting just three games behind the division leaders.
Game one showcased a stellar performance by Marlins pitcher Edward Cabrera. The young right-hander was in top form, pitching six brilliant innings without conceding any earned runs. Cabrera’s mastery on the mound included ten strikeouts, leaving the A’s batters in a constant state of frustration. However, it was Jesus Sanchez who stole the show for the Marlins. Sanchez had a tremendous outing, going 3-4 at the plate, including a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. His two-run shot in the first inning set the tone for the Marlins’ offensive onslaught. Additional contributions from Jorge Soler and Bryan De la Cruz secured a 4-0 victory for Miami. The Marlins bullpen proved flawless, shutting down the A’s for three scoreless innings.
Game two witnessed the Marlins exploding for an impressive 12 runs on 14 hits, delivering their best offensive display of the season. Eury Perez, the star rookie pitcher, continued to dazzle in his major league career. Perez pitched five innings of sheer dominance, allowing zero runs on four hits while striking out five Athletics. His outstanding performance earned him his third win of the year, maintaining an impressive 2.25 ERA. However, it was Luis Arraez who truly stole the spotlight in this game. Arraez had a monster game, going a perfect 5-5 at the plate, driving in five RBIs and scoring a run himself. Joey Wendle also had a significant impact, going 3-4 and crossing the plate three times. With George Soriano providing three solid innings of relief, the Marlins emerged victorious with a commanding 12-1 triumph.
In Game three, the Marlins showcased their resilience by overcoming a four-run deficit. Despite falling behind 5-1 after the A’s erupted for five runs in the third inning, the Marlins refused to back down. Sandy Alcantara, who experienced a rough third inning, regained his composure and delivered a stellar performance for the remainder of the game. Alcantara pitched a total of seven innings, not allowing another run from the A’s offense. The Marlins’ comeback began in the fifth inning when Garret Cooper launched a three-run homer, leveling the game at 5-5. In the eighth inning, Arraez stepped up once again, driving in another crucial run with a single to right field. With a 6-5 lead, the Marlins added an insurance run when Bryan De La Cruz struck out but a passed ball allowed Nick Fortes to score from third, sealing a 7-5 victory.
The Marlins capitalized on an Oakland team struggling to find its footing this season, having won only 12 games thus far. Looking ahead, the Fish will carry their momentum into the upcoming series against the Kansas City Royals, who have won just 18 times this year. The Marlins will have a prime opportunity to sweep or get another series win against the Royals.
As the season has progressed the Fish find themselves battling as an improving team. The offense and pitching have started to click simultaneously and this has allowed Miami to find themselves in a position where the NL- East leading Braves are within in sight. If Perez, Luzardo, Cabrera and Alcantara can solidify the starting rotation and start to give Miami quality starts, expect Miami to become a serious contender. For the week, Luis Arraez is the offensive MVP as he raised his batting average to .392 for the year adding two more hits on Sunday, on the back of five hit and five RBI Saturday.
