Islam Makhachev proved once again why he is regarded as one of the most dominant fighters in the UFC today. In front of a sold-out crowd, including former President Donald Trump, Makhachev defended his lightweight title and extended his winning streak to 14 fights, securing a submission victory over Dustin Poirier in the fifth round. This victory not only added another defense to his title but also solidified his place in UFC history.

Makhachev’s performance was a display of his wrestling expertise, as he took Poirier down in the first round and controlled the fight from the ground. Despite Poirier’s attempts to fight back and even bloodied Makhachev’s face, the champion’s skill on the mat proved too much. In the fifth round, Makhachev seized an opportunity, taking Poirier down and applying a chokehold that Poirier could not escape, ending the fight.

With this victory, Makhachev’s record stands at an impressive 26-1, and he hinted at the possibility of moving up in weight for new challenges. “This is my dream,” Makhachev said, emphasizing his desire to create a lasting legacy by possibly aiming for a second belt.

Poirier, on the other hand, faced his third defeat in a title fight, all ending in submission. At 35, he is contemplating retirement, saying, “I’ve got to see. I think this could be it.” Poirier’s resilience and skill were evident, but once again, he fell short against a top-tier wrestler.

The co-main event saw former middleweight champion Sean Strickland returning to the win column with a split decision victory over Paulo Costa. Strickland, who lost his title in January to Dricus Du Plessis, dominated much of the fight with strategic kicks and controlled exchanges. Despite the back-and-forth nature of the fight, Strickland’s persistence paid off, particularly in the final round when he knocked Costa down with a kick, nearly finishing the fight before the clock ran out.

Strickland’s record now stands at 29-6, and he expressed his desire for another title shot, stating, “I want to fight for the belt.” Costa, who spent much of the fight backpedaling, suffered his third career loss by decision.

Kevin Holland also made headlines by successfully returning to the middleweight division, defeating Michal Oleksiejczuk with a submission. Holland’s victory adds to his impressive record, with 85% of his wins coming by stoppage.

The event, held in Newark, New Jersey, delivered high-stakes action, particularly in the main and co-main events. While some preliminary fights did not live up to expectations, the headliners ensured a memorable night for the fans.

Makhachev’s 14-fight winning streak is now the longest active streak in the UFC, and his 13-fight winning streak in the lightweight division is a new record. With his latest victory, Makhachev tied the UFC 155-pound record for most title fight wins, joining the ranks of legends like B.J. Penn, Benson Henderson, and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
