LeBron James, one of the greatest basketball players of all time, made history on February 7th, 2023, by surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the all-time leading scorer in the NBA. In a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, James scored the 38,388th point of his career surpassing Abdul-Jabbar’s previous record of 38,387 points. LeBron James, now in his 20th NBA season, entered the league in 2003 as a promising 18-year-old prospect from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio. Since then, he established himself as one of the game’s most dominant players, winning four NBA championships, four Most Valuable Player Awards, and earning a place on the All-NBA team 18 times.

The road to breaking Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record was a long and arduous one for James. But throughout his career, he has averted significant injuries and has continued to play at an elite level despite this being his 20th season in the league. The scoring record is a testament to James’ relentless work ethic, preparation, and unmatched competitiveness to maintain his status as the game’s most dominant player.

Tonight was not just a historic one for James and the NBA, but also for the entire sports world. In front of a packed crowd at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, James took the court with the weight of history on his shoulders. Kareem’s record had stood for 39 years and was viewed as one of the most unbreakable records across all sports. Prolific scorers like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone, and Larry Bird had fallen well short of it. But at the end of the third quarter, he surpassed Abdul-Jabbar’s record with an 18-foot fadeaway jumper, sending the crowd into a frenzy and sending a message to the world that he is not just one of the greatest players of all time, but one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Even more impressive, Lebron was able to break Kareem’s record by attempting 478 fewer shots than Kareem and by making 1,785 fewer shots. James now ranks as the number-one scorer in NBA history and is also 4th in assists and 9th all-time in steals. James is currently on pace not only to become the only player to reach 40,000 career points late next season but also to become the only player with at least 40,000 points/10,000 rebounds/ 10,000 assists. At times, James who is a pass-first player has been ignored and shunned as one of the greatest scorers in NBA history. But as James puts the finishing touches on his history-setting career, this night will cement his name in the conversation of the all-time greatest scorers. As James reflected on his pending record-breaking night on his HBO show, The Shop: Uninterrupted, James said: “When they talk about the best scorers who ever played the game, my name never comes up. They have no choice now. They have no choice.”
