Jared Cannonier made a remarkable statement in the main event of UFC Vegas 75 as he shattered a UFC record for the most significant strikes landed in a middleweight fight. Going head-to-head against Marvin Vettori at the UFC Apex institute in Las Vegas, Cannonier displayed his dominance.
The judges’ scorecards were unanimous in declaring Cannonier the winner, with scores of 49-45, 49-45, and 48-46. While Cannonier’s performance was commendable, Vettori also received recognition for his resilience in enduring the highest number of significant strikes ever absorbed by a middleweight fighter in UFC history. Cannonier delivered an astonishing 249 significant strikes, surpassing the previous record of 186.
Both fighters, had previously challenged the reigning middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, but fell short in their attempts. Adesanya is expected to defend his title in Australia in September, and Cannonier expressed his willingness to serve as the backup fighter for that bout. Looking ahead to UFC 293 in Sydney, Adesanya’s next opponent will be determined by the outcome of the fight between Robert Whittaker and Dricus Du Plessis in July. With Cannonier’s victory over Vettori, he firmly positions himself as a contender for another shot at the 185-pound title.
For Cannonier, the clash with Vettori was a crucial opportunity to regain his path to the title after his defeat to Adesanya last year. The explosive showdown at UFC Vegas 75 showcased Cannonier’s determination as he secured a clear unanimous decision victory over Vettori.
Vettori, who had only one loss besides his encounters with Adesanya, boasted an impressive 9-1-1 record in the UFC. However, Cannonier proved to be the superior fighter. Having previously transitioned from heavyweight to light heavyweight before settling in the middleweight division, Cannonier held a solid 6-2 record in the weight class, with his only losses coming against Whittaker and Adesanya.
The majority of the bout remained a stand-up battle, with Cannonier executing a few takedowns while relentlessly attacking his opponent. Even as Cannonier shattered the record for significant strikes in a middleweight fight, Vettori displayed incredible resilience.
After an intense five rounds of action, the judges’ scorecards overwhelmingly favored Cannonier with scores of 49-45, 49-46, and 48-46. While Cannonier acknowledged that he may not be the immediate choice for a title he has made his case as the next man up and has positioned himself to get his rematch with Adesanya after he fights the winner of Whitaker and Du Plessis.
