In a thrilling semifinal matchup, Japan defeated Mexico to advance to the World Baseball Classic Final. Facing off against each other in a high-stakes game, both teams put up a strong fight, but it was Japan who ultimately emerged victorious.
Early on, Japan’s Roki Sasaki was dominating on the mound, striking out batters left and right with 100 mph+ pitches.
However, in the fourth inning, Mexico’s Luis Arias hit a three-run homer to give Mexico a 3-0 lead, ending Sasaki’s impressive run and forcing Japan to go to the bullpen early.
Mexico’s Patrick Sandoval stepped up and pitched 4.1 innings, recording six strikeouts and no earned runs. But once he was out of the game, Japan seized the opportunity for a comeback. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with two outs and two men on base, Masataka Yoshida hit a clutch three-run blast that tied the game at 3-3.
Mexico responded in the 8th with a run scored by Alex Verdugo, but Japan continued to fight.
With the game on the line in the bottom of the 9th, Japan rallied. Shohei Ohtani doubled to start the inning, followed by a walk to Yoshida. Munetaka Murakami, who had been 0-4 up to that point, hit a double to left center field, scoring both Ohtani and Yoshida for the game-winning runs.
Mexico’s relief pitching struggled, allowing six runs in four innings of work, while Japan capitalized on every opportunity to secure their victory.
