LifeWallet athlete and University of Miami guard, Isaiah Wong, is a 2022-2023 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Third Team All-American, as announced this morning. Wong is the fourth basketball player in University of Miami history to earn All-American status from the NABC.
Rick Barry (first team), Tim James (third team) and Shane Larkin (second team) are the only prior Hurricanes to register All-American honors from the NABC, which is one of four outlets that are used for consensus post-season All-American lists.
Wong has averaged a team best in points (16.2), assists (3.4) and steals (1.4) per game during the 2022-2023 season. He is shooting 45.3 percent from the field, 37.8 percent from beyond three and 83.6 percent from the foul line.
Since the 2000-2001 season, only nine Division I players have recorded a similar stat line, with the most recent one during the 2016-2017 season and the last Power Six occurrence in the 2006-2007 season. Those nine players are Quinton Hooker of North Dakota (2016-2017 and 2015-2016), Jalan West of Northwestern State (2014-2015), Billy Baron of Canisius (2013-2014), now All-NBA guard Damian Lillard of Weber State (2011-2012), now All-NBA guard and four-time NBA Champion Stephen Curry of Davidson (2008-2009), Aaron Brooks of Oregon (2006-2007), Delonte West of St. Joseph’s (2003-2004), Troy Bell of Boston College (2000-2001) and Kyle Hill of Eastern Illinois (2000-2001).
Wong, the ACC Player of the Year led 16th/15th ranked Miami to a share of the ACC regular season championship with the Virginia Cavaliers, during his 2022-2023 regular season campaign. He is a finalist for three national awards in the John R. Wooden Award, the Lute Olson Award and the Jerry West Award. In addition to being an Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention, the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team, NABC All-District 2 First Team, USBWA All-District IV Team and the ACC All-Tournament First Team.
Wong and the fifth-seeded Miami Hurricanes start their March Madness tournament run on Friday at 7:25 P.M. EST, against 12th-seeded Drake University in Albany, New York at the MVP Arena. The game will broadcast on the TBS Network.
