Inter Miami CF and Orlando City SC played to a scoreless draw on Wednesday night in a night that Messi did not play. Both teams showcased strong defensive performances, with the match held at INTER&Co Stadium. The draw extended Inter Miami’s unbeaten streak to eight games in the regular season.

Inter Miami, now with a record of 8-2-4 and 28 points, earned a point against their rivals, maintaining their position atop the Supporters’ Shield standings. Goalkeeper Drake Callender played a pivotal role, making three clutch saves and earning his second clean sheet of the season. Callender wore the captain’s armband in the absence of Lionel Messi, who was sidelined with a knee injury.

Inter Miami made two changes to their starting lineup from their previous victory over CF Montréal. The defense consisted of Marcelo Weigandt, Tomás Avilés, Nicolás Freire, and Franco Negri. The midfield trio included Julian Gressel, Sergio Busquets, and Benjamin Cremaschi, while Matías Rojas and Robert Taylor supported forward Luis Suárez in attack. Left-back Jordi Alba made a return to the squad after recovering from an injury sustained in April.

The opening half was evenly matched, with both teams creating early scoring opportunities. Luis Suárez had a promising chance in the second minute, but Orlando’s goalkeeper Pedro Gallese made a crucial save. Robert Taylor also came close in the sixth minute, but his effort was blocked by Orlando’s defense. Defensively, Inter Miami stood firm, with Callender making a standout save in the 31st minute to deny Orlando midfielder Martin Ojeda. The score remained 0-0 as both teams headed into halftime.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock. Inter Miami made key substitutions in the 64th minute, bringing on Jordi Alba and Leonardo Campana for Negri and Suárez. Alba’s return was highlighted by a dangerous cross in the 74th minute, but Orlando’s defense managed to clear the ball before it reached any Inter Miami players.

Inter Miami’s head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino praised his team’s defensive solidity and organization. “I think that we were a very solid team defensively tonight. And that’s what stood out most to me… On the other side I think that we were an organized team that played out of the back well and circulated the ball well,” Martino said.

Inter Miami faces a quick turnaround as they prepare to host D.C. United at Chase Stadium on Saturday, May 18, at 7:30 PM ET. Despite the absence of their star player Lionel Messi, Inter Miami’s resilient performance against Orlando City highlights their depth and defensive strength, keeping their unbeaten run alive and maintaining their lead in the league standings.
