The Miami Hurricanes are not done adding talent to their top-10 ranked recruiting class; on Thursday evening, Mario Cristobal and his coaching staff dipped into the junior college ranks and landed the second-highest ranked cornerback, Demetrius Freeney, out of the College of San Mateo (CA).
A recruitment that was spearheaded by Miami defensive back coach Jahmile Addae, in the Hurricanes continued efforts to acquire more talent at the cornerback position. Freeney, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback chose Miami over his other finalists in Colorado, Houston, Indiana, Louisville and Oklahoma.
The most remarkable traits that stand out about the JUCO prospect, he runs a 10.9 100-meter dash and was a former high school quarterback. However, he is not your average junior college football prospect. Freeney decided to enroll at a junior college to raise his recruiting profile coming out of high school and he has three years of eligibility remaining; although he is classified as a 2024 prospect, he is a full academic qualifier and can join the Hurricanes Football program this fall.
As a freshman during the 2022 season at the College of San Mateo (CA), Freeney recorded two interceptions and six pass breakups, while forcing and recovering a fumble.
While Freeney is a big addition to the Miami Football team for this upcoming season, it gets better though. His teammate, Sione Laulea, will be coming down on an official visit this weekend to visit the Miami Hurricanes; Laulea is also the top-ranked JUCO cornerback in the country. Mario Cristobal, Jahmile Addae and the entire Miami coaching staff will be putting all hands on deck this weekend to potentially land a massive two-for-one on the recruiting front.
