Five-star defensive lineman David Stone is set to announce his commitment on August 26th from a final six of Miami, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Florida, Oregon and Texas A&M. Stone is the number two defensive line prospect in the nation and ranked sixth overall. The 6’4-270lb recruit out of IMG is an extremely versatile prospect that can play anywhere along the defensive line at the next level.
Stone is originally from Oklahoma but transferred to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida prior to his Junior season. The talented lineman was named to the MaxPreps Junior All-American team after an impressive first season at IMG. Stone is able to create pressure from any spot on the defensive line and is extremely disruptive with his nearly seven-foot wingspan.
Miami, Michigan State and Oklahoma have long appeared to be the leaders in this recruitment with Miami and Oklahoma seeming to separate themselves from the pack. Oklahoma is the hometown team and has been considered the leader in recent weeks, but Miami is making a late push and has consistently made Stone a priority throughout the process. The Oklahoma native has made it down to Miami’s campus multiple times since being at IMG Academy.
In addition to multiple unofficial visits, Stone took an official visit to Miami on June 9th. Stone also took official visits to Florida, Michigan State and Oklahoma in the month of June. As Stone’s recruitment winds down, this seems to be one that will come down to the wire. Miami, Oklahoma and Michigan State all feel like they are very much in it for the five-star prospect.
Miami landed blue chip safety Zaquan Patterson Saturday afternoon and the Canes hope to continue that momentum into Stone’s announcement at halftime of IMG’s 7PM game on ESPN. This has been a recruitment with many twists, but sitting here a few hours prior to Stone’s commitment, I like where Miami stands. The persistence by the staff and the relationships that they’ve made with Stone and his family appear to be paying off. Miami has also sold Stone, who wants to enter the medical field, on the academic aspect of UM. Oklahoma is battling till the final whistle, but Miami looks to have set themselves up well going into tonight.
