Spain took down England 1-0 to take home the Women’s World Cup Title on Sunday Night. After the U.S. was eliminated in the round of 16, Spain and England had the two highest odds of winning and they met in an epic finals matchup. Spain’s win secured their first Women’s World Cup title in the country’s storied history.

Spain took an early lead with an impressive goal by Olga Carmona. The Spaniard delivered a strike across the field from the left side of the box to the bottom right corner of the net. Carmona scored late in the semifinal to send Spain to the World Cup Final and carried that momentum into the final against England.

England had numerous chances, including an early shot by Lauren Hemp that deflected off the crossbar, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The 1-0 score held going into the half, where England made multiple substitutions in an effort to increase their offensive attack.

The second half saw a lengthy VAR review on a handball whichresulted in a Spain penalty kick. The English goalkeeper made a miraculous diving effort to keep the score at 1-0 and help England stay in striking distance. The Spanish defense stayed strong and didn’t allow many scoring chances even with an additional 15 minutes of added time. Carmona’s early first half goal proved to be the difference as Spain lifted the trophy and were crowned the queens of the soccer world.

This world cup showed that the gap between the USWNT and many of the other world soccer powers no longer exists. The U.S. had a mix of players that are past their prime and talented youth that just didn’t seem ready for this stage yet. The USWNT national team will look to bounce back as a changing of guard appears ready to happen before the next Women’s World Cup.
