FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The Miami Dolphins (2-3) managed to scrape out a gritty 15-10 victory over the New England Patriots (1-4) in a game defined by penalties, missed opportunities, and clock management miscues. While neither team found a consistent rhythm, the Dolphins capitalized on a late touchdown by Alec Ingold to secure the win.
In a game marred by special teams errors, Miami’s kicker Jason Sanders drilled three field goals to compensate for two earlier misses and a blocked punt. It was Ingold’s 3-yard plunge into the end zone with just four minutes left that ultimately gave the Dolphins the lead for good. That run capped off a 15-play, 80-yard drive that included several penalties but saw the Dolphins grind their way down the field.
Despite their struggles, the Patriots had two chances to answer after Miami’s go-ahead score. The first ended when a review overturned what initially looked like a touchdown catch by Ja’Lynn Polk, whose foot barely came down on the end line. The second opportunity fizzled out after Jacoby Brissett hit Hunter Henry for 25 yards, but with no timeouts left and the play occurring in the middle of the field, the Patriots couldn’t stop the clock in time for another play.
Tyler Huntley, making his second start in place of injured Tua Tagovailoa, had an up-and-down performance, completing 18 of 31 passes for 194 yards but also throwing a costly interception. His supporting cast, however, helped keep the Dolphins afloat. Tyreek Hill caught six passes for 69 yards, Jaylen Wright rushed for 86 yards, and Raheem Mostert added 80 more on the ground, combining for a balanced offensive effort.
For the Patriots, running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who had been benched to start the game due to ball security issues, led the offense with 89 rushing yards on 12 carries, including a 33-yard touchdown. That score was set up by an interception from rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Brissett, the former Dolphins quarterback, struggled to find consistency, completing 18 of 34 passes for 160 yards.
Penalties plagued both teams throughout the game, but New England was particularly undisciplined, racking up 12 penalties for 105 yards, with five of those being offensive holding calls. “As the game wore on, our fundamentals began to slip,” said Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo. “We preach about avoiding pre-snap and post-snap penalties, but today it just wasn’t our day.”
The Dolphins, despite their own share of miscues—including a botched field goal snap, a missed field goal, and a blocked punt—managed to hold on to their lead thanks to a bend-but-don’t-break defense and timely execution in key moments.
Miami now heads into a much-needed bye week before facing the Indianapolis Colts, hoping they can get Tua Tagovailoa withing the next three weeks to see if the season can be salvaged.
