Canes Win Cross Town Baseball Matchup Against FIU

After a disappointing weekend series in Gainesville, the Canes’ Baseball team bounced back with a big series win against a NC State team that came to Coral Gables with an undefeated record of 13-0. After winning their first conference series of the season, Miami took that momentum into a midweek matchup at FIU. Thanks to a strong pitching performance and some late game heroics, the Hurricanes came away with a 7-3 win on the road over the Panthers.

It was a slow start for the Canes as FIU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning; but the Miami pitchers settled down and only allowed one run through the remaining 8 innings. Once the Canes’ pitchers got into a groove, the offense responded in the third inning with a two-run homerun by Jack Scanlon to tie the game. The teams traded single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to keep the game all tied up at three. Pitching dominated the next three innings and both teams remained scoreless.

In the top of the ninth inning the Canes’ offense broke out of their scoreless slump and did so in a big way. CJ Kayfus got on base to start the inning before Edgar Villegas put the Canes up 4-3 with an RBI double, and they weren’t done yet. An FIU error that extended the inning allowed Zach Levenson to reach base and Villegas to score to give Miami a 5-3 advantage. Jacoby Long stepped up to the plate and helped put the game away with a two-run homerun that gave the Canes some more breathing room heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Alejandro Torres came in for the save to close out an impressive game for the Miami pitchers. Torres shut the door on the Panthers with a scoreless inning in the bottom of the ninth and the Canes made the short drive back home with a 7-3 win. The Canes will remain in Miami for the weekend as Virginia Tech makes the trip down to Coral Gables for a big ACC weekend series matchup. The 17th ranked Hokies are 12-4 on the season and will be a tough conference opponent for a Miami team looking to win their second ACC series of the season. The Canes hope to have luck on their side this weekend as the series gets started on St. Patrick’s Day with first pitch Friday night at 8pm at Mark Light Field.
