Regardless of the recent outcomes on the field, there’s never any shortage of high school prospects repping the Miami Hurricanes’ brand across the country. ‘The U’ still holds weight and it’s nearly impossible to go to any camp, 7v7, or recruiting event without seeing players wearing Miami gloves, cleats, sleeves, towels etc… while out on the field competing. With OT7 partnering with Adidas for their national championship and encouraging the players to stick to Adidas branded gear, there was more Miami gear than ever on display even out here on the West Coast.
Elija Lofton Commitment
During the first night of pool play at OT7, news broke that four-star TE Elija Lofton had committed to Miami. Lofton is a west coast kid out of Bishop Gorman high school in Las Vegas and word of his commitment quickly spread throughout the California based event. Lofton was spoken of in very high regard by many of the top athletes competing at the event. I gathered a few anonymous quotes from players familiar with Lofton:
Four Star 2025 QB: “He’s really like that for real. I was at Miami on a visit with him over the summer and he’s going to be great there.”
Four Star 2024 TE: “Elija can really do it all. He’s not the biggest tight end, but you can play him anywhere and he’ll make things happen.”
Four Star 2024 QB: “I’ve worked with him a few times out here and always been impressed with the way he moves. What really surprised me was how physical he is when I saw him playing in pads.”
Jerrick Gibson Names a Top 3
The Canes’ made the cut for four star running back JerrickGibson who named a top 3 of Miami, Georgia and Texas at the OT7 event. Gibson recently visited Miami and Georgia and left Coral Gables very impressed by his weekend with the Miami staff. After OT7 this weekend, Gibson will take an official visit to Texas and I would not be surprised if a summer commitment announcement followed soon.
Prospects Just Want to See Miami Win
Whether it’s local five stars Jeremiah Smith and Jojo Trader, or top cornerback prospect Ellis Robinson, the common theme among top players considering the Canes’ is they just want to see some on field success. Miami’s staff has done an incredible job communicating with and recruiting these elite players and tons of money is being poured into the program to ensure the facilities and NIL opportunities are among the best in the nation.
After talking to many of these top prospects that have been on campus recently, the main thing they’re waiting on are signs of on-field improvement. If the Canes show that they are moving in the right direction and can come away with eight or nine wins this season, things on the recruiting trail could get very hot in Coral Gables.
FSU Commit Lawayne McCoy Still Listening to Others
Four Star Miami Central WR Lawayne McCoy is committed to Florida State, but as he said on a recent Life Wallet Sports twitter space, he’s still very open to other schools recruiting him. Miami, UCF and Auburn are three of the schools that have continued to push hard for McCoy despite his commitment to the Noles. McCoy seems to be very receptive to the attention from these staffs and I would not be surprised at all to see him reopen his recruitment completely in the coming months.
Pool Play for the OT7 National Championship finished up Friday night in LA, with elimination play starting on Sunday afternoon, be sure to stay tuned for more OT7 updates from Life Wallet Sports.
