The Boston Celtics clinched their 18th NBA championship in a 106-88 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in Game five of the 2024 NBA Finals, adding another historic chapter to their storied franchise. This win marks their first championship since 2008 and moves them ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers, who hold 17 titles.

The Celtics’ triumph is a witness to their collective strength, epitomized by the exceptional contributions from both their starting lineup and bench. Under the guidance of second-year coach Joe Mazzulla, Boston flexed their depth and toughness throughout the playoffs. Mazzulla, at 35, is the youngest coach to lead a team to a championship since Bill Russell in 1969.

Jaylen Brown, who was named the NBA Finals MVP, contributed 21 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Jayson Tatum, the backbone of the team, had an impressive 31 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds. Jrue Holiday added a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while veteran Al Horford came close to one with nine points and nine rebounds.

Kristaps Porzingis, despite playing with a leg injury, provided crucial minutes and defensive presence. Sam Hauser and Payton Pritchard also played pivotal roles, with Pritchard hitting his second buzzer-beater three-pointer of the series.

The Celtics dominated the game from the start, closing the first quarter with a 9-0 run and extending their lead to 21 points by halftime. Dallas never managed to reduce the deficit to single digits in the second half, as Boston’s relentless defense and efficient offense proved too much for the Mavericks.

Luka Doncic led Dallas with 28 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to keep the series alive. Kyrie Irving, in a challenging performance, scored just 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting. The Mavericks, despite a strong effort, couldn’t overcome the Celtics’ cohesive play.

Boston’s playoff journey was marked by an impressive 16-3 record, finishing with an 80-21 overall season record. This achievement places their winning percentage second only to the 1985-86 Celtics team. Their path to the championship was paved with dominant performances, including ten double-digit victories, the second-most in franchise history for a single playoff run.

Celtics President of Basketball Operations, Brad Stevens, played a crucial role in assembling the championship roster. Key additions such as Derrick White, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jrue Holiday, alongside the return of Al Horford, fortified the team. This combination, alongside the growth of homegrown talents like Tatum and Brown, proved to be the perfect recipe for success.

The victory was celebrated by the entire Celtics family, with notable appearances from Bill Russell’s widow, Jeannine, and his daughter, Karen Russell. The legacy of Celtics greats, including the 2008 champions Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, who were traded for draft picks that eventually became Brown and Tatum, was honored in the moment of triumph.
As the Celtics celebrate their championship, the focus now shifts to sustaining this level of excellence. With a young and talented core, the team is well-positioned for future success. The blend of veteran leadership and emerging stars promises to keep Boston competitive for years to come.

In the words of Finals MVP Jaylen Brown, “We did it together, and that was the only way that we could do it was together. I hope that when people watch us play, they see the joy that we play with, that we love playing together, and we got it done together. That’s the most important thing.”
