Former Miami guard Isaiah Wong, who is UM’s fourth all-time leading scorer, has been selected by the Indiana Pacers with the 55th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Wong was the catalyst of Miami’s historic 2022-23 season. The 6-foot-3 guard averaged a team-high 16.2 points and 3.2 assists per game and was recognized at the end of the season as the ACC Player of the Year. Wong declared for the 2023 NBA Draft after four seasons with the ‘Canes. He had one year of eligibility remaining but decided to capitalize on the fantastic year he had.
“I’m a 22-year-old kid coming into the NBA, so I feel like I got a lot of experience with college preparing me,” Wong said to reporters in April about what he offers to NBA teams. “I’m a playmaker and I can get people involved and I can score at three levels. I feel like I play hard with the best of them,” Wong said.
Here’s a scouting report on Wong from NBA Draft Room:
“Isaiah Wong is a high scoring 2 guard who is a bit undersized for the pro game but has a quick first step and the ability to get his own shot. He’s got good handles and can be creative with the ball, beating the defender with [hesitations] and crossovers. He needs to get more consistent with his 3pt shot to excel at the next level. Has improved his strength a lot since his freshman season, which has helped him out a lot on the defensive end and with finishing through contact on the offensive end. Wong is a natural shooting guard who can run the point a bit as needed. This versatility could be his ticket to making [an] NBA roster.”
