Tepezza (Teprotumumab-trbw) is a Thyroid Eye Disease medication that has demonstrated an increased risk of hearing-related side effects including permanent hearing loss and tinnitus. Tinnitus is a condition in which the person suffering experiences a ringing or other noises in one or both ears. While “some” risk was disclosed by Horizon Pharmaceuticals when Tepezza was initially approved by the FDA, the risks are now known to be far greater.
In April of 2022, David Weibel of Illinois filed suit against Horizon, claiming that they failed to warn him or his doctors about the significant risks of hearing loss and tinnitus, which he further claims led directly to his permanent impairment. He took the drug from June 2021-September 2021, and began using it less than six months after it was approved by the FDA.
The lawsuit seeks punitive damages due to the claim in the complaint that Horizon allegedly “willfully, wantonly, and intentionally conspired, and acted in concert, to ignore relevant safety concerns and to deliberately not study the safety and efficacy of Tepezza” as required by law.
