The Miami Marlins closed out their weekend in Queens with a statement win, defeating the New York Mets 5–1 on Sunday behind Sandy Alcantara’s dominance and a timely blast from Agustín Ramírez.
Miami, desperate to shake off a string of seven straight series losses, showed grit and resilience by taking three of four from a Mets team clinging to the final National League wild card spot. For a club that has been searching for consistency, the scrappy effort against a division rival was a much-needed boost.
Alcantara (8–11) looked every bit like the Cy Young winner of old, firing seven strong innings and allowing just four hits while striking out six. He carried a shutout into the seventh, but tensions boiled over after plunking Mark Vientos. The two exchanged stares, benches and bullpens emptied, and although no punches were thrown, the moment underscored Miami’s fight. Alcantara calmly regrouped, induced a pair of groundouts—including one that scored Jeff McNeil—and then fanned Starling Marte to slam the door on the rally. The right-hander now sports a 2.82 ERA over his last eight starts after beginning the season with a bloated 7.14 ERA.
The Marlins’ offense gave Alcantara plenty of breathing room. Otto Lopez opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first, and Ramírez delivered the knockout punch in the third, crushing a 386-foot two-run homer after Jakob Marsee’s double. Heriberto Hernández added an RBI single in the fourth to cap the night for Kodai Senga (7–6), who surrendered five runs in 4 2/3 innings.
For Miami, the key moment came in that third inning when Marsee extended the frame with two outs. Ramírez, one of the Marlins’ exciting young bats, made Senga pay with a no-doubt drive that quieted the Citi Field crowd and set the tone for the rest of the night.
The win not only sealed a rare series victory but also handed the Mets another frustrating blow in a month where, despite setting franchise records for runs (177) and homers (53) in August, they stumbled to an 11–17 record.
Up next, Miami heads to the nation’s capital to face the Washington Nationals. The Marlins have not yet named their starter, while Washington will send rookie left-hander Andrew Alvarez to the mound for his major league debut.
